Mikal Cronin is a friend and musical associate of San Francisco garage-rock wunderkind Ty Segall -- and he might be the newest name local rock fans need to know (if they don't already). With a self-titled debut coming out Sept. 20 on Trouble in Mind, Cronin dropped a preview in the form of "Apathy," a loud-quiet rocker that's about as addictive a grunge jam as we've heard in a while.
Cronin played in Moonhearts with Ty Segall, and even played in Segall's own band, so there's naturally some overlap in their sounds (and that's a good thing.) But while we've always gotten a '90s vibe from Segall, "Apathy" sounds like a forgotten MTV Buzz Bin hit from about 1994, with its soft acoustic intro and relentlessly catchy chorus. The song then rises into a noisy climax complete with what sound like off-kilter saxophones. It's pretty rad:
