Last year, local songwriter/cool guy Sonny Smith started an art project you may have heard a thing or two about: He invented 100 fake bands, wrote 100 different singles from each one (with an A side and B side!), and made art for those 100 singles.

Yeah, the guy's ambitious.

But then, Smith and a bunch of friends began recording some of those songs. The initial volume was released earlier last year; the second box set -- a set of five singles from the project on 7-inch vinyl -- was released in December; and, on January 25, 100 Records Vol. II will come out on CD from Turn Up Records. Collaborators on the project include: Ty Segall, Kelley Stoltz, the Sandwitches, Tim Cohen of the Fresh & Onlys, and others. We've got a sample for you after the jump.

Did we mention the awesome band names that are a part of this project? Outfits such as Noppie Clarke and the Protesters, Cabezas Cordades, The Fabulous Romantic Tony Zulb, and Earth Girl Helen Brown?

Take a listen below, and check out more on the project here.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
