If you haven't been paying attention this year, The Pack's Young L has emerged a production tour-de-force, giving birth to some of the most original sounds this year. On his latest track, "Conscious Minds," the Berkeley native steps away from his usual, out-of-this world sounds and plays around with a beat more rooted in reggae and dub influences, with a splash of something that sounds like it could have been in an '80s Phil Collins song.

As an MC, Young L is far from offensive. But much like Madlib, Kanye West, or J Dilla, he's not doing his beats nearly enough justice with his own flows. In fact, I have a recurring dream where the now defunct, Def Jux-affiliated duo Cannibal Ox get back together to record an album produced entirely by Young L. It won't ever happen, but I can dream, right?

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
