The Internet allows people with too much time on their hands to do something they enjoy above all other pleasures: to make fun of other people with too much time on their hands. Such is the deal with Tom Scott's Stupid Fight
, which "scientifically" determines who's dumber (another favorite human pastime) in the battle between two favored celebrities. Scott's Web-based device looks at a celeb's fans on Twitter, and judges them in mere seconds based on the number of "stupid indicators" like using too many exclamation points in a row, using OMG loosely, and other traits of both the very young and the very mom. The opening battle on the site is between Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber loyalists: In the end, Gaga's fans win as the biggest losers, or in Scott's words, are "dumb as a bag of hammers." From there I tried a couple other mainstream acts. Slayer and Metallica were deemed "as dumb as each other," while Beyonce's fans are seeminly less intelligent than Jay-Z's. And then, surprisingly, Green Day's fans aren't as clever as you may think, compared to Insane Clown Posse's "smart as a whip" crowd.
The game works in only a few variations, so it gets old as ragging on the icons it takes down a notch. But on the flip side, it's also a pretty perfect indicator of the way judgements are passed about public figures--and the music they make--in an era where opinions are sent along with the speed of clicking the "return" key. Or, in the case of this item on Stupid Fight, in the time it took me to make a blog post.
