White Denim @ the Independent

The mish-mash of musical styles on White Denim's new album, Fits -- or on last year's debut, Explosion, and a handful of prior EPs and singles -- meshes surprisingly well. Perhaps the trio isn't actually from Austin, but another planet entirely, where alien technology has figured out how to fuse roadhouse soul, free jazz, disco-punk grooves, noise-rock, garage-blues, and psych-folk into a properly righteous and riotous swirl. As wild and varied as White Denim's recordings sound, its music really comes to fruition live, where the group makes it feel like anything and everything could happen simultaneously. And it usually does.

White Denim performs tonight at the Independent (8 p.m., $12-$14)

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
