Video of the Day: Paris Takes on the Health Care Debate

Posted By on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 2:07 PM

This video isn't big on the visuals side, but I like the fact that Bay Area rappers are so quick to respond to current events and social memes (see Kev Choice's "The Bridge"; Mistah F.A.B.'s "Hit Me on Twitter"). Davey D's Hip Hop Corner highlighted local rapper Paris' new clip for "Side Effect," where he describes taking an ER ride to SF General after getting shot, only to get tangled up in hospital bureaucracy. The song has a vivid narrative told from within a community for whom "basketball, alcohol, and jail" are the escape routes, and without access to health care, "in the hood, it's just another way for you to bury us."

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
