We don't have to give you the news that today's Friday. We can tell by the way you're counting the minutes until lunchtime, after which you'll be counting the minutes until quittin' time, after which you'll be...yeah, who knows? But here's a couple recommendations for doing up the weekend on a budget.
1. Intelligence, Oh Sees, Ty Segall at Annie's (Friday)
One man's junky noise is another's post-punk treasure, and this show, friends, is our tippy top recommendation for Friday night. Seattle band Intelligence is in town to promote its best record yet, Fake Surfers. Fake is a tangle of misfiring-circuitry rhythms, hail-on-a-tin-roof beats, and space 'copter sound effects. There are also, of course, plenty of nonsensical choruses like "I don't have time for squids." Hey, who does? Intelligence headlines a bill at Annie's with two of our local favorites, Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall. All this for only $8? We take that back, we do have time for squids. (9 p.m.)
2. Daniel Higgs at Aquarius (Friday)
Lungfish leader Daniel Higgs performs a quietish set of fractured folk at this free in-store performance. The Valencia store calls Higgs a modern day shaman of sorts, and he'll be paired with "drone improv dude" Bill Nace. Get yourself into a heavy trance starting at 6 p.m.3. Record Store Day (Saturday)
5. Sunny Happy Hours on the Patio (All Weekend)
Where can you get a drink, outside, that doesn't leave you in Zeitgeist's long lines? May we suggest El Rio (happy hour from 1 until 3), The Irish Bank, Broken Record, and Finnegan's Wake, for starters?
6. Bluegrass by the Beach: The Earl Brothers at The Riptide (Saturday)
Whenever it feels like summer, our inclination is to head out to the beach. And since the beach makes us thirsty (all that salt water) we like to pull up a seat at one of the Riptide's burl tables for a refreshment. Saturday night the bar hosts free local bluegrass with the Earl Brothers, whose tales of dark days will brighten your spirits. (Free, 9 p.m.)
7. Surfshop Slide Show at Mollusk (Saturday)
Eric Soderquist and Chris Burkard surfed
every break they could between Oregon and Mexico, then turned the
experience into a book and a slideshow. Tonight our favorite surf
shop/art gallery, Mollusk, hosts a free event centered around their two-month
adventure, starting at 7 p.m.
8. Cardboard Car Races in Oakland (Saturday)
The LoBot Gallery in Oakland hosts the finals for Cardburg, the East Bay's handmade version of NASCAR, or something. (Free, 8 p.m.)
9. Dirtybird in the Park (Sunday)
on the street is the sun's gonna make another strong appearance this
weekend--perfect for folks inclined to move along an outdoor dancefloor.
Local label Dirtybird is
hosting a dance party from 2 until 6 p.m. in Golden Gate Park, where
you can catch some rays along with a whole load of top-notch house and
techno tunes. Follow the beats, and please, the label asks, don't pee
in the bushes. This is the season opener, leading to future grassy
knoll discos, so long as the revelers behave themselves in front of the
10. White Elephant Gift Exchange in Dolores Park (Sunday)
You deserve a present. But you're too broke to buy one. No problem. Find something you wouldn't be embarrassed to receive, email a
photo of your white elephant to the gift exchange's organizers (firstname.lastname@example.org), and
show up at Dolores Park at 2 p.m. and you could become the proud foster
parent to someone else's old stuff.
