Surya Dub has become one of the most popular club nights in the city in a relatively short amount of time. What factors have contributed to getting so many bodies through the door? I think we’ve been able to offer something fresh and new to clubgoers by combining underground, dub-influenced electronic music along with the more organic roots side of the sound, which hasn’t really been done anywhere in the States. Also there has been a surge in the popularity of Dubstep and we have been a major proponent of the music. Overall I think people like to go out and hear a variety of styles of music in an unpretentious atmosphere and one can do that at Surya Dub at Club 6. And I have to give credit to Angel Cruz (owner 6), who has given me the freedom to build an audience and grow the crowd organically.
What interests you about dubstep music, and dub in general? The BASS, I love to feel that low frequency rumble! Also I am fascinated by the experimental nature of dub production techniques which have been applied to all forms of electronic music today.
Favorite DJ experience: DJing a sunrise set after an all-night outdoor rave south of Fort Funston, overlooking the Pacific Ocean from a cliff and having a crowd full of die-hards still dancing!
Strangest situation where you've been asked to DJ: At a wealthy family’s mansion for a wedding with several big game cat stuffed trophy skins all over the place.
Worst request: Can you play something we can dance to?
Most treasured vinyl score: Spacemen 3 – Losing Touch With Your Mind… (Marble Colored Clear Vinyl Picture Disc)
Name one artist people might be surprised to know you like/love: Well it's more of an era thing, but I really love a lot of what my grandparents used to listen to in the early Bollywood days of the 50’s & 60’s. Lots of duet love songs b/w Kishor Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, & Asha Bhonsle
Explain the concept behind Dhamaal Artist Collective and what's currently in the works there: Well Dhamaal came out of a group of collaborators experimenting with traditional S. Asian classical music and underground club music (DnB/Breaks) along with live visuals and contemporary S. Asian Art. Dhamaal disbanded 2 years ago but several of the folks are still doing their new projects such as the Sub Swara crew in NY who are blowing up!
Musical mantra: Well kinda like “Space is the Place” but “Bass is the Place”
Question we didn’t ask you but you often ask yourself: Why don’t I live in Europe where I could make a living DJing underground music?
What other music-related projects are you currently working on? Well I haven’t had a ton of time to work on new music productions but I have a couple of collabs with Surya Dub’s Kush Arora. Between Surya Dub, Dub Mission, DJing at various events, and my day job, which is in music technology and new media, I’m around music all day and night, so that is plenty.
