International Pop Overthrow was the name of an album by a favorite band of mine when I was still in high school (anyone else like Material Issue back in the day? Loved that Chicago pop act). It's also the title of an indie pop music festival that hits Los Angeles, Chicago, NY, Boston, and London, among other cities. In San Francisco, it packs seven bands a night into the Rockit Room between Aug. 12 and the 16th. The artists are mostly local, and from the lineup I can recommend Josh Fix, whose catchy power pop has already been featured as an NPR song of the day. Fix performs at 9:30 on the 12th. For the full IPO schedule, check here. -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
