Nevada City may be a small town, but it has quite a lot of cultural cache. Musicians from Jonathan Richman to Terry Riley and Joanna Newsom have lived in the scenic Sierra Foothills gold rush town. There's a cool little arts scene there (not to mention some fantastic swimming holes), all of which you can check out when the eighth annual Nevada City Film Festival hits that town August 14 - 17. I was at last year's festival, and I left very impressed with the wide array of films screened there from around the world -- everything from documentaries like Girls Rock! (which later played the Bay Area) to silly animated shorts and dramatic features. This year the event includes an appearance by Thumbsucker director Mike Mills (who is rumored to be setting up shop in Nevada City). The filmmaker will screen a collection of shorts, including his music videos for Moby, Yoko Ono, and Air (wonder if he'll also include his video with girlfriend Miranda July for Blonde Redhead?). Definitely a great excuse for a road trip outta town. -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
