Something about the band name Megafaun made me think this was some kinda jam band. And in some ways, it was. But this Raleigh, N.C. trio is less overblown guitar wankery and more back porch improvisation, mixing earthy harmonies and gritty guitar work with banjo picking and stomped out percussion. There's something naturally compelling about the music these dudes make, and something that mixes well with the folksy/rocky music made around here by bands like Vetiver. The music on Megafaun's MySpace travels through time between the days of The Band and Dylan and contemporaries like The Avett Brothers. It's great stuff, and if you're around over the upcoming holiday weekend, you should check out Megafaun at 12 Galaxies on Thursday, July 3. First, you can check out one of their great tunes, "Lazy Suicide," here. -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
