(Barcelona rock band It's Not Not)

If you're into bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves, Les Savy Fav, and Minus the Bear, there's a collection of Spanish bands in Barcelona pulling from similar influences. They're on the BCore Disc label, which tags itself as existing to "fill the gap that existed in Spain concerning punk and hardcore music." They're offering a free sampler online, and the songs are neither punk nor hardcore -- they're all just different shades of pop and indie rock. A number of the bands even sing in English. Like any comp, these songs range from the good (It's Not Not, Trip Trap) to the not so good (any of the acts smacking of emo), but it's free and it's a cool little doorway into the rock scene in one of my favorite cities in the world, next to San Francisco of course.Download the sampler here. -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
