The US Air Guitar championships hit San Francisco twice this summer. Per usual, the qualifying round will be held at the Independent, this year on June 25. But this year we'll also be hosting the finals -- meaning all those shredders of invisible instruments will be converging here on August 8 at the Grand Ballroom in hopes of making to the Air Guitar World Championships August 20 – 22 in Oulu, Finland. As a judge for the past two years at the Independent, I’ve got to say we’ve sent some hilarious ax impersonators to the finals in the past – but I’ve also witnessed too many applicants who take this shit so seriously they deflate out all the fun. My advice: practice your moves ahead of time, but don’t forget to make it entertaining for the crowd and the judges to watch. And if you lose, no pouting! Leave that crap for Dancing with the Stars. Otherwise, plan on an evening of reliving the best of buttrock when the Air Guitar folks float into town. – Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
