Werkers Compensation

Wednesday, Oct 23 2013

Fall Into Vogue is an old-school style voguing and runway competition. Contestants are encouraged to "werk and turn," and must deliver "10's across the board." For the uninitiated, voguing is a dance and runway fashion style that emerged from the underground gay scene in New York City in the '70s and '80s. The movement combined the esthetics of the disco era and the DIY attitude of early hip-hop to create its own unique culture. It was documented excellently in the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, and appropriated most effectively by Madonna in the video for her song "Vogue." Tonight's contest features three categories: Butch, Femme, and Freak LeChic. Entrants are judged on a mixture of attire, runway skills, and overall fierceness. Celebrity judges include Joshua Grannell (better known as Peaches Christ), Miss Gay United States 2013 Mercedez Munro, and drag superstar Miss Rahni. Hosts for the evening are Grand Duchess Pat N Leather and Jeremy Boatman, with music from DJs DAMnation and Princess Cut. "Dressed to the nines" to get in free before 7:30 p.m.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
