Staff writer Matt Smith received the first place fashion and design writing award for his June 24, 1998, story "Art on Two Wheels," which explored the dedication to style and craftsmanship exhibited by owners of custom-designed art bicycles.
Staff writer Lisa Davis was named a finalist in two categories. Her Aug. 5, 1998, feature story "The Fairfield Wives," an expose of the dubious medical practices of a Fairfield physician, was named a finalist for the Paul L. Myhre Award for best single story.
Davis was also a finalist in health and fitness reporting for her Sept. 10, 1997, story "Giving Away the Hospital," the first critical examination of the then-proposed merger between the UCSF and Stanford medical centers. Ironically, the UCSF-Stanford merger is again this week's cover story subject, as many of the very problems Davis presaged in her initial investigative piece have come to pass.
