When we were little kids, the closest we got to the androids of our movie-fueled fantasies was playing Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots at our cousin's house. Otherlab doesn't think that's a bad place to start. Its life-size boxing robots are fine examples of lightweight inflatable constructs combined with advanced simulation tools to make efficient, low-cost robots. And they're hilarious. Several bouts will be held at Robot NightLife, a covey of robots, their humanoid makers, users, and lovers. Meet "Scout," a new force in stop-motion cinematography created by Bot & Dolly, the design and engineering studio behind Gravity's success; or join the forward thinking community builders at Robot Garden (they'll let just about anyone use their laser cutters, 3D printers, and AR.Drones, as long as world domination is not a motivating factor). Groups such as Evil Mad Scientist, BeatBots, and SRI International will be on hand to play, show off, and talk business. And, should you find yourself cornered in the bathroom by a laser-eyed cyborg, just recite Isaac Asimov's First Rule of Robotics. Everything will be fine.
