True and False

The Believer asked author Lydia Davis: “How do you know a story’s a story?” Davis, whose stories are featured in Liss Fain Dance company's new performance installation, The False and the True Are One, said, "It's a hard thing to define, but to be simple about it, I would say a story has to have a bit of narrative." The ongoing battle against the proscenium, waged by lots of performers around here, finds a definite expression tonight as audiences walk from room to room (echoes of Joe Goode's Traveling Light at the Old Mint a while back) in no fixed pattern. Jeri Lynn Cohen of the fantastic Word for Word theater company reads Davis' stories, longtime Fain collaborator Matthew Antaky lights the rooms, and an original score by Dan Wool accompanies everything. Dancers Jennifer Beamer Fernandez, Private Freeman, Megan Kurashige, Shannon Kurashige, Alec Lytton, and Bethany Mitchell enact Fain's famously interdisciplinary choreography -- looks like the emphasis is on "a bit" of narrative, but everyone just saw something different, so you'd better go out for drinks after.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
