Toro Y Moi: Show Preview

Chaz Bundick's February release as Toro Y Moi surprised indie-electronic pop listeners who thought the genre sounded basically like the Notwist, the Books, or the Postal Service. The South Carolinian imbued his bedroom opus, Causers of This, with rich shoegazey guitars, soulful falsetto vocals, and stuttering electronic arrangements that come off like N.E.R.D's Pharrell produced by Flying Lotus. Bundick may surprise again onstage this week with his new live band setup and live video backdrops from L.A.'s Fair Enough, who will also provide eye candy for classical music–influenced beatmaker Nosaj Thing and misfit guitar-beat duo Jogger.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
