The Men: Show Preview

Wednesday, Jun 20 2012

Indie rock has always been a record-collector's genre. And perhaps no current band represents that lineage as faithfully as the Men. Their latest album, Open Your Heart, covers all the tracks: Big Star, the Buzzcocks, Sonic Youth — you know the pool. The Brooklyn band has raided the past and, like a small but essential record store, cut out the fat. Which raises a question fit for a conversation between Sister Wendy and Simon Reynolds: as rock 'n' roll evolves, does it also die a little? We dunno. But for our money, the Men provide a safe bet for a Sunday night's ascent into a Marshall stack.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
