Terry Malts: Show Preview

Wednesday, Mar 7 2012

Terry Malts deal in some of the best blown-out pop punk on the Bay Area scene right now — and they haven't even been at it that long. Killing Time, the band's debut full-length, was released earlier this year on influential Oakland indie label Slumberland Records, and its appeal is immediate — at least if you like the Ramones. Ripping through 14 songs in 33 1/2 minutes, Terry Malts meld effervescent pop songcraft with nasty sonics and relentless tempos. But it's the band's grinning indifference — lyrics about nausea, neurosis, and needing the weekend, sung with charming detachment and bubblegum backup vocals — that turns these gritty ditties into buzzworthy earworms.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
