The art of tap dance plays with time, and the making and breaking of silence with the harsh clack of a tap shoe — a percussive instrument that becomes an extension of the human body. Since 2003, the Bay Area Tap Festival, organized by San Francisco's year around tap warriors STEPOLOGY, has paid homage to this unique art form. Masters of the craft spend a week running instructional workshops, showing how various styles can lend themselves to both melodic tiptoeing and stage-slamming rage. The festival includes a free panel discussion, scholarship program, and of course, a number of performances showcasing all of these styles, which culminate in the final Bay Area Rhythm Exchange Concert Performance on Aug. 17. Backed by live music, both veteran and newcomer dancers work together to create lightning on stage in this unique celebration of the craft.
The Bay Area Tap Festival starts at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 13 (and continues through Aug. 18) with a concert performance at 8 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Marines' Memorial Theatre, 609 Sutter Street, S.F. Call (415) 294-4941, or stepology.com.
