Shaken and Stirred

Wednesday, Nov 21 2012
The San Francisco Symphony breaks out its holiday hooch early this year, with a pop concert featuring global sensation Pink Martini. This sassy ensemble tinkers in genre-defying repertoire, mixing an eclectic set of sounds like Afro-Cuban, dance, jazz, cabaret, and, yes, orchestral pop. The band is a veritable musical melting pot of acclaim and diversity, stirred with a multilingual songbook, and enjoyed by a multicultural, multigenerational following. This event sees the San Francisco return of ingénue China Forbes, who was recovering from emergency throat surgery the last time these two powerhouses performed together (last summer). Fully recovered and working on a new album, Forbes and Pink Martini offer a night of romance, lively entertainment, and even some holiday fun. Who cares if you can't make it to your winter wonderland this holiday season — enjoy a musical staycation with a splash of color.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
