Twisted Tale of a Groupie
Let's hope it's not a trend: And what exactly is a "successful" murderer groupie? This girl [Samantha Spiegel] is tragically damaged and tremendously insecure ["Killer Instinct," Ashley Harrell, Feature, 12/8]. Why is her story something to publicize this way? I deeply hope other impressionable young women did not find anything glamorous in this article, but I fear otherwise.
Nature Over Nurture: San Francisco has long needed a dedicated civic mental hospital. This girl is definitely a candidate to be an inmate there as she is clearly a danger to herself and possibly others (e.g., the little girls she was prepared to kidnap). Her mere existence is a great argument against adoption and the concept that nurture can override nature. Of course, she's not the first privileged, affluent kid who enjoys slumming, exhibitionism, and playing at crime, because having the opportunity to achieve something constructive in life is just, well, so boring.
Talking About Nudes and Prudes
When being nude becomes something more: With this article, the "nudists" have exposed themselves in a whole new way ["Overexposed," Lauren Smiley, Feature, 12/1]. Those profiled who admitted getting a sexual thrill out of being naked in public effectively sabotaged their naturism argument. If they're doing it because it turns them on, then they're exhibitionists, not nudists, which also means they're guilty of behaving in a "lewd" manner (as defined by this article as "intended for sexual gratification"), and therefore in violation of San Francisco law. I can understand why parents wouldn't want their kids exposed to adults' sexual thrills, and after this article, they may feel more willing to sign those arrest cards.
Voting for the nudists to move to another neighborhood: I live four blocks from Castro Street on the Mission-Castro border . I am tired of the Castro being the epicenter of controversial issues and political and charitable canvassing. Let me point out: The old saw is "Only in San Francisco." As such, the issue should also be taken in other parts of the city — the Marina, Inner Mission, Excelsior, Sunset, etc — especially when heteros are trying to make their point. Another thing: Let the anonymous [nudists] give their full names. So let's put it to a vote.
What would their mothers think?: The fact that most of the "nudists" (exhibitionists is a better word) want to remain anonymous indicates that even they know something isn't quite right with what they're doing. This is more about people engaging in their personal sexual fetishes than any lifestyle choice. There are plenty of acceptable places for real nudists to go (nudist camps, beaches) where people don't stare and they don't create a public spectacle and that's what a real nudist wants. This is obviously about people exposing themselves and making a public spectacle and that's what an exhibitionist wants. A real nudist doesn't want that.
I feel sorry for the families of these "nudists." They must be so embarrassed. I would be absolutely mortified if one of my relatives engaged in this. I also wonder what their friends and co-workers think about them. Sexual fetishes are fine — everyone has them — but they should be kept somewhat private and only shared with certain people.
