Seun Kuti: Show Preview

Wednesday, Jul 13 2011

While the musical about his deceased firebrand father, Fela Kuti, is earning Broadway gold, Oluseun "Seun" Kuti is appealing to a new generation of Afrobeat fans. Fela's youngest son has embraced his dad's creative legacy with politically charged albums like 2011's From Africa with Fury: Rise. If you missed his S.F. debut at Stern Grove last year, catch Seun this week at the Regency, where he'll trade sax solos with original Egypt 80 band member Adedimeji "Showboy" Fagbemi while skillful dancers enhance the percussion-fueled tunes. Kuti delivers real-deal African funk with searing commentary, while Malian opener Khaira Arby will balance things out with her joyous Sahara desert jams. Inspired by her late mentor Ali Farka Touré, Arby unites Arabic, Berber, and North African sounds.
