Secret Chiefs 3: Show Preview

Wednesday, Feb 1 2012

Fans of long-dormant S.F. avant-rock band Mr. Bungle may long for a reunion, but some consolation can be found in its members' prodigious output. While not quite as prolific as singer Mike Patton, multi-instrumentalist Trey Spruance has covered a wide range of sounds with his group Secret Chiefs 3. Twisting together reverb-heavy surf guitar, Middle Eastern scales, musique concrète, cinematic orchestrations, and corrosive metal since the mid-1990s, Spruance and his ever-rotating cast of collaborators have ventured even further afield of late. Less experimental but no less bold, L.A. outfit Dengue Fever will offer its eclectic, high-energy take on '60s Cambodian psych-pop — anchored by the bewitching vocals of South Asian singer Chhom Nimol — when the bands share the stage at the Great American Music Hall on Thursday, Feb. 2, and Slim's on Friday, Feb. 3. 8:30 p.m.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
