Sasha: Show Preview

Wednesday, Jan 19 2011

One of the figureheads of progressive house in the '90s, Welsh-born DJ and producer Sasha has maintained pole position within the ranks of the club world by sidestepping the ego-driven styles of trance and big-room electro for a more ambient style that's equally pneumatic and emphatic. Stockpiling prime swatches of moody tracks from around the globe, he uses custom MIDI controllers and laptop sequencers such as Ableton Live to balance context-free samples and real-time re-edits. Though eschewing pure pop stylings, Sasha still incorporates pitch-drunk melodies into irrepressible, jitter-strewn rhythms. So while no longer "epic," he remains endowed, and he satisfies through dense, driving tonal convergence rather than lengthy build-ups.

The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
