San Francisco-ed

Four Shanghai artists visit S.F. for "Shanghailand," and one of our favorites is photographer Ma Liang. In one of her prints, a lady stands center-shot. She's blind. She's walking her rabbit through a sad indoors scattered with carrots. She could be an amalgam of Alice in Wonderland characters. Is it a silly picture, or serious? Liang likes to scatter smallish objects on the floor of her photo shoots: Sometimes it's birds, to set off a man who looks like he would like to fly, or dead leaves around a misplaced and overaged Boy-Scout type. The point of the exhibit, curated by Monika Jm Lin, is partly to illuminate the incredibly weird place it's named for. The other artists are You Si, Ying Yefu, and Si Wei and Jin Ningning aka Perk.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
