Redefining Realness

Wednesday, Mar 19 2014

It's inspiring to see the curators of longstanding shows still excited about what they're doing — but of course, their excitement is part of what makes their shows longstanding. Every month for over a decade, Charlie Jane Anders has assembled an unpredictable combination of sci-fi, comedy, fantasy, erotica, and other forms of literature into a show unlike any other, Writers With Drinks. This month, she hosts New York-based transgender women's rights activist Janet Mock. "I've been amazed at the way Janet has expanded the scope of what we're able to talk about in the so-called mainstream," Anders says. "My favorite moments at Writers With Drinks don't happen during the event. My favorite part is running into people on the street an hour or a day later, and hearing them quote something that one of the readers/performers said that stuck with them. Luring someone like Janet to the event is aces because I know without a doubt that she will say things that people will be talking about for days afterward." The show also features Ayelet Waldman, Margo Gomez, Annalee Newitz, and Marie Brennan — a lineup that inspired a change of venue.

Writers With Drinks starts at 7 p.m. at Elbo Room, 647 Valencia St., S.F. Admission is $10-20; call 552-7788 or visit

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
