Pulling Out of Nazareth

Wednesday, Jan 18 2012
Between the ages of 12 and 30, much Jesus of Nazareth’s life is a mystery. According to some scholars and theologians, he used those years to log miles. He’s been as far as England, and after his resurrection, there’s an appearance to Native Americans centuries before any Europeans arrive. According to the most solid evidence we have, however, Jesus spent those 18 years in India. The play Jesus in India, by Lloyd Suh (American Hwangap), imaginatively tells the story of that time, depicting Jesus and his companion Abigail of Galilee on the road. The land they travel is spiritually charged with Buddhism and Hinduism, ruled by great maharajas, and entertained by punk rockers. The New Testament (Luke 2:52) says “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man,” during this time. If that’s so, then Jesus in India could be among the best (if not completely satirical) accounts of his journey.
