Philip Glass' Progeny

Wednesday, Aug 6 2008
Grumps of the "classical music is dying" variety should be heartened by the existence of Nico Muhly. The fresh-faced 27-year-old Juilliard graduate creates music that combines the avant garde-ism of Philip Glass with the humor of a young Mozart. His orchestral work has been played by the likes of the Boston Pops and the Chicago Symphony, but he's also collaborated with musicians like Bjork, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Rufus Wainwright. This kid jumps genres like they were mere rain puddles. No doubt he'll be making a big splash soon. Catch him before that happens. With Doveman, Sam Amidon.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
