Peter Murphy: Show Preview

Wednesday, Nov 30 2011

As the voice of caliginous post-punk demagogues Bauhaus, Peter Murphy's legacy would have been secured even if he had faded into the ether when the band first broke up. But Murphy didn't — instead he surged back into popularity around 1990, with Deep, his third solo effort and an album that tempered his commanding gloom with celebratory introspection. His material since has ebbed and flowed in its level of dramatic impact, but on his latest, Ninth, Murphy is again hitting on all cylinders. The album is at times crunchy, hazy, writhing, creeping, and imbued with Bowie-like cocksure strutting.
