In all of hip-hop, is there a steadier hand than Pete Rock's? After 20-plus years as a DJ, producer, and MC who has worked with the cream of alt-rap's crop, the Bronx legend has yet to lob a misfire. He's even managed to produce the most enduring example of the much-derided "jazz-rap" genre (1992's "They Reminisce Over You," with CL Smooth). At the other end of the cred spectrum, there's hometown hero Paris, who has squandered a blisteringly fierce flow on a series of once-urgent (Sleeping with the Enemy, also '92) but increasingly dumbed-down agitprop (9/11 conspiracy theories, anyone?).
