Broadway changes people. Not just in a "scored a leading role and now on annoying, mandatory vocal rest" way, but also in a "scored tickets to a Patti LuPon concert and now for the mandatory freak-out session" way. Most people leave a musical theater concert with not only a contrived New York accent, but also an overwhelming feeling that the world isn't such a terrible place after all. And if the sequin-wearing, teary-eyed fangirls and fanboys at Liza Minnelli's recent San Francisco concert are any indication of our city's musical theater crowd, the patrons at Bay Area Cabaret's 10th anniversary season closer are going to make it a fun night. Broadway star Karen Mason (who was in the original cast of Mamma Mia!) performs hits borrowed from Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, and, of course, Judy Garland in her one-woman performance The Secret of Ancient Divas. Here's to hoping that Ms. Mason spills the secret to musical lovers' enthusiasm.
