Motor City Drum Ensemble: Show Preview

Roman Flügel hails from Frankfurt, where he established a mix of spooked dub, acidic electro, and jackin' tech-house as Soylent Green and Alter Ego, along with several other guises. Anchored with an analog pulse and propelled by symphonic harmonic sweeps, his DJ sets bang tightly one moment and let off clusters of frayed, stuttering tracers the next. Appearing with Flügel this Saturday is Motor City Drum Ensemble, aka Danilo Plessow, whose name pays homage to both his hometown of Stuttgart and the sound of Detroit techno — though with rubbery bass, vamping soul samples, and heavy thumps, his raw cuts often build slowly in a crackling Chicago style. Motor City sets draw together circular funk chords, scuffed drum clatter, and deep house melodic grooves.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
