Matthew Dear: Show Preview

Wednesday, Feb 22 2012

An original on the Ann Arbor techno scene, producer/DJ Matthew Dear spent much of the last decade releasing various flavors of house and synth-pop under a variety of aliases. In recent years, however, Dear, now based in New York, has transitioned into the role of bandleader and pop songwriter, drawing freely from the templates of Brian Eno, David Byrne, and Arthur Russell. Internalizing the sounds of industrial, Afrobeat, electro, and ambient for his latest Headcage EP, Dear assembles porous rhythms and spectral washes. His tracks balance charming melodies with uneasy undertones, thickening into synthesizer-licked, chugging robofunk.
