Magda: Show Preview

Wednesday, Dec 1 2010

An integral member of the Minus Records collective alongside Richie Hawtin, Troy Pierce, and Marc Houle, DJ and producer Magda has established herself in the last decade as a cornerstone for fans of minimal electronic music. Threading through Detroit, New York, and Berlin both philosophically and physically, her style carves a helical path around stripped-down, disco-filtered tech-house. On From the Fallen Page, her full-length debut, she compiled 10 amorphous and film-friendly tracks. She casts dry, grinding bass and reverberant percussion with panting, swollen textures, though never to the full banshees-in-heat extreme of her Italian cinema influences. Joining her live is labelmate Houle, touring on his own album, Drift, which comprises eight tracks of grayscale, artfully disintegrating techno, but with influences that include eight-bit synth-pop and dark wave.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
