Latyrx: Show Preview

Wednesday, Nov 14 2012

Born out of the lauded Northern California hip-hop collective Solesides — the same group that produced DJ Shadow and Blackalicious — Latyrx was a short-lived, much-loved partnership between rappers Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker. Their 1997 full-length became a touchstone in underground hip-hop circles for its deeply complex, forward-thinking rhyme schemes and spacey electronic production. But for all the respect it earned, the Latyrx album never got a true follow-up — instead both rappers went on to successful solo careers. That's about to change: Lyrics Born and Lateef have teamed up for a new Latyrx EP, Disconnection, out this week, and a new album due next year. They celebrate their reunion at a special release show this week with Gift of Gab, another hugely skilled rapper from the Davis collective who's left a big mark on NorCal hip-hop.
