John Cale: Show Preview

You don't really think of John Cale as just one of the other guys in the Velvet Underground, do you? Because it turns out that while, yes, Cale did co-found the Velvets with Lou Reed, he's also made some incredible music outside of that partnership, from his avant-garde experiments with legends like La Monte Young and John Cage to a body of solo work that's sometimes elegiac and sometimes brutal. Cale's latest album, Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood, finds him roaming through some rather diverse territory: He collaborated with Danger Mouse for beat-heavy opener "I Wanna Talk 2 U," but makes "Living with You" into the kind of swirling, psychedelic ballad for which Cale should be way more famous.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
