Last year, Danilo Macarrao and Marina Junqueira shook it so hard they won. Before you think "Pfft, I could do that," admit to yourself that in a hard-shakin' town such as ours, you have to shake it really hard to win the title at the Carnaval King and Queen Competition. For most of us, it's about appreciating the moves, not making them, but for eight talented dancers, the competition is a chance to shimmy and shimmer in six all-important categories (including audience reaction, which is where you come in). Performing in Folkloric, Brazilian, Caribbean, or Contemporary/Fusion styles, the dancers compete for five hundred bucks and the honor of sitting on the royal float come crazy-time, aka Carnaval, in May.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
