Hunx-a Hunx-a Burnin’ Love

Wednesday, Mar 23 2011
The first ever "proper" full-length record by Hunx & His Punx, Too Young to Be in Love, opens with "Lovers' Lane," the best gay Shangri-Las tribute ever — we've heard plenty of Shangri-Las tributes, but none this awesome and this gay. When your producer is Ivan Julian of Richard Hell & the Voidoids, and you're recording in a studio where Ronnie Spector once recorded, you need to bring it, shake it, flaunt it, work it, nail it, and say fuck it, all at the same time, and that is exactly what H&HP did here, holy crap. Let's talk Wall of Sound: How many bands have taken a stab at creating their own? Again, we've heard plenty, and liked most, but this record's Wall of Sound is the best. Bandleader Seth Bogart's nasal whine fronts a dream team all-girl backing band featuring vocal genius Shannon Shaw from Shannon & the Clams plus Michelle Santamaria, Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein; tough gals behind a sissy rocker boy. We plan to Beatle-scream all the way through tonight's record release party.

Grass Widow and Shannon & the Clams open.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
