Extra Golden

Here's a heartwarming story: Cross-cultural collaboration makes good, endures death of original member, overcomes visa troubles courtesy of then-Senator Barack Obama, and helps relatives endure political maelstrom in Kenya through fan donations. Extra Golden, formed in Nairobi while American guitarist Ian Eagleson studied Kenya's benga scene, has evolved into a real global village, sidestepping world-music-as-cultural-imperialism debates through pure songcraft. The band's latest release, Thank You Very Quickly, perfects a coupling of benga's busy guitars, throbbing basslines, and laid-back drumming with indie rock's unfettered spirit. Fuzzy guitar tones dance beneath rich, direct vocal performances as the band charms you out of your multiculti stereotypes.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
