Instrumental psych trio Earthless can be excused for taking six years to record a follow-up to 2007's transcendent Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky. With monster drummer Mario Rubalcaba busy playing in hardcore supergroup OFF! as well as the reunited Hot Snakes and Rocket from the Crypt, and guitarist Isaiah Mitchell relocating to the Bay Area to start several bands (Golden Void, Harderships, Black Elk Medicine Band), it's a wonder they all finally got around to it. However, one listen to the brainpan-scorching epics on the new Tee Pee Records release From the Ages proves the album well worth the wait. With the relentless, bruising swing of Rubalcaba and bassist Mike Eginton providing a launching pad, Mitchell's spectacular flights of fury propel the extended jams "Violence of the Red Sea" and the 30-minute title track into a deep, third-eye-opening orbit. Get levitated by Earthless when it shares the stage with fellow San Diego psych trio Joy and local fuzz-busters Hot Lunch.
