Don't Hate the Playa

Wednesday, Jun 5 2013

Going to Burning Man for the art might sound kind of like reading Playboy for the articles, but the fact remains: Playboy has some good articles, and Burning Man has incredible art. Last year's burn included a dizzying array of interactive sculptures, a multi-story mock-up of Wall Street (watching that go up in flames was pretty cool), and a life-sized model shipwreck. Get a peek at what's in store for the Playa this year at the Burning Man 2013 Desert Art Preview. The preview is part of Burning Man's annual artist lecture series, and is moderated by the ever-present $teven Ra$pa. The evening will open with a discussion of this year's art theme, "Cargo Cult" (also called "The Myth of Return"), and then proceed with a series of presentations from the artists themselves. Speakers include Beth Scarborough, Crimson Rose, the International Art Megacrew, and the Flaming Lotus Girls.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
