DJ Kentaro: Show Preview

Wednesday, Apr 13 2011

Japanese DJ Kentaro Okamoto is no stranger to firsts. He was the first Asian DMC world champion and the only DJ in the history of the competition to receive a perfect score. He was also the first Japanese artist to record a Solid Steel mix CD for the respected electronica label Ninja Tune. Kentaro meticulously blends reggae, drum 'n' bass, hip-hop, jazz, and funk, often switching styles on the fly with razor-sharp turntablism and jaw-dropping scratch improvisations. And chin-stroking be damned – the relentless tempos of his live sets are aimed straight at dancers. Attendees at his upcoming S.F. show can let loose and do good at the same time: Proceeds from the night will be donated to GlobalGiving's Japan Earthquake and Tsunami relief fund.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
