Last November, Justin Vernon was plucked from obscurity when Kanye West enlisted him for West's blockbuster album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Vernon had already won adoration from critics and fans for layering delicate falsetto vocals atop swirls of electronic noise, but the Wisconsin native's commercial profile was relatively small. That changed as soon as Vernon harmonized the surreal opening bars on West's hit "Monster." These days, his group Bon Iver — also comprising guitarist Michael Noyce, bassist Matthew McCaughan, and drummer Sean Carey — is the toast of mainstream outlets like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. The band's eponymous, malevolently soulful sophomore disc was released in June.
