It's a different San Francisco here in the brown grass and weeds of the southeast. On this promontory sticking out into the bay between the old Navy shipyard (and soon-to-be neighborhood) and San Mateo County, there's open space to be had and nary a soul around aside from the men fishing off docks and broken concrete blocks and bird watchers focused solely on the herons flitting over the water. They won't bat an eyebrow as you knock a golf ball around like some of the older men from the neighborhood do here from time to time. And while looking for your ball in the underbrush, take note of the wild fennel that grows so well here near doomed Candlestick Park. None of it will be here forever.
