Consider this before kicking sand in someone's face on Ocean Beach: The Barra Brothers Jiu-Jitsu Academy is just a few steps away. There is a good chance that any surfer you're harassing spends their spare time at Barra Brothers learning takedowns, armbars, and triangle chokes. The school is co-owned and run by San Francisco native and surfing enthusiast Matt Lopez, who seems to know everyone in the Outer Richmond. Head instruction is handled by his business partner Carlos "Sapão" Ban. Ban grew up training with the legendary Gracie family in Brazil. He went on to become the Brazilian national, world, and Pan-Am jiu-jitsu champion, before shifting his focus to teaching. The school offers classes for self-defense and competition six days a week. You'll have to look elsewhere for surfing lessons.
