The Poor Righteous Teachers' last album, 2001's independently released Losing My Religion, went almost unnoticed. But the New Jersey trio of MCs Wise Intelligent and Culture Freedom and producer/DJ Father Shaheed had a more prominent place in the hip hop scene in the '90s when they joined like-minded groups such as Brand Nubian in expressing conscious music from the standpoint of the Five Percent Nation, an African-American social/religious movement inspired by the teachings of Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. No new PRT album has been announced as of yet, though Wise Intelligent will soon drop a solo record, Wise Intelligent Is the Talented Timothy Taylor. So this may be a chance to see if the guys have been tinkering with any secret material. Coolie High (featuring Mark Spitz and Maestro Black) and DJs Jah Yzer, Shortkut, Smoky, Mr. E, and Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist are also on the bill, rocking the funky joint on Friday, May 27, at Club Six; call 863-1221 or go to www.clubsix1.com for more info.
