Austra: Show Preview

Wednesday, Nov 9 2011

Austra chanteuse Katie Stelmanis possesses an unusual talent. As her band produces crisp, reserved, minimalist electro-pop, made with the simple tools of synths, drums, and bass, Stelmanis flutters in a remarkable soprano. "Don't want to lose you/ Don't want to lose," the opening lyrics in "Lose It," off debut album Feel It Break, come out as an airy "Don't want to loo-hoooo-ze yaaa/ Don't want to loo-hoo-ze." Unsurprisingly, the vocalist is classically trained, and has sung in operas since childhood. This makes her work in pop music a real treat for the ears. If the Toronto trio's music can ascend to the heights of Stelmanis' voice, it's bound for great things.
