Ambulatory Motion That Even Los Angeles Can Love

Wednesday, Sep 18 2013

Los Angeles has been notoriously hostile to its own dance companies, despite Angelinos swarming the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion when renowned companies like American Ballet Theater, the Kirov, and Nederlands Dans Theater come to town. But the city's Bodytraffic, founded in 2007 by Lillian Rose Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, is a contemporary dance company that commissions its repertory from well-established choreographers. Named one of Dance Magazine's 25 to Watch earlier this year, Bodytraffic is an elite set of dancers who are eager and willing to absorb style after style, helping to sate our southern neighbor's desire for the novel and foreign. The company performs a mixed bill at ODC Theater Sept. 26-29, with Barak Marshall's And at Midnight, the Green Bride Floated Through the Village Square, a dance theater piece about a family of nine children in the 1940s, Richard Siegel's o2joy, a celebration of American jazz, and a preview of Kyle Abraham's ballet-hip-hop infused Kollide.

Sept. 26-28, 8 p.m.; Sun., Sept. 29, 7 p.m., 2013

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
